Pupil Premium funding was first introduced in April 2011, and paid by means of a specific grant based on school census figures for pupils registered as eligible for Free School Meals in Reception to Year 6, to help them achieve well in school. This category now includes any child that has been registered for Free School Meals in the past 6 years (known as “Ever 6 FSM”).
A Pupil Premium has also been introduced for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces. This service premium is also designed to support the emotional and social well-being of these pupils.
The Department For Education has given schools the freedom to use the Pupil Premium as they see fit, based upon their knowledge of their pupils' needs. However, schools are accountable for how this money is spent and are required to publish how they are spending their Pupil Premium funding allocation.
